FCDS YAG Delegation Excels at Statewide Conference

Congratulations to the 67 students who represented FCDS at the 2025 N.C. Youth and Government Conference in Raleigh! The students (with advisors Grace Mason, Jessy McCormick, and Mike Kneisel) spent the long weekend learning about and participating in mock government to understand how to become changemakers and improve their communities.

Students participated in a mock state government conference and had the chance to work as participants in mock trial, court of appeals, or legislation, as well as to elect their own youth governor, lieutenant governor, and a variety of other positions. They heard from state officials like Josh Stein and Wyatt Gable - the youngest state representative elected to the NC General Assembly - and networked with students from other school districts. They worked hard and learned a great deal about representation at the state level!

The following FCDS students were in leadership positions:
  • Yutonia Tang - Senior District Attorney
  • Jay Dunnagan - Senior Budget Analyst
  • Harris Breitling - Media Associate Editor
  • Anika Pawa - Attorney General
  • Grant Faraci - Chief of Staff
Fun government gala superlatives were awarded to:
  • Charlotte Morath - Best Fun Night Outfit
  • Gracie Whicker - Model Delegation Leader
  • Olivia McNatt - Most Helpful Delegate
Bills passed in Legislative:
  • Gracie Whicker, Ava Claire Scherer, and Angelina Paparoupas: A bill to implement drink covers in establishments that serve alcohol.
  • Dylan Robinson - A bill establishing high-speed rail connecting Raleigh and Charlotte
"YAG is an amazing program where you get to meet other teens with the same passion for government and getting involved in their communities. I've learned so many things and developed real-life skills like public speaking, advocating for things I believe in, and stepping out of my comfort zone," said FCDS junior Mia Fitzsimmons
