93-year-old Holocaust Survivor Delivers Powerful Speech to Upper School

On Friday, Dec. 7, the Upper School heard from guest speaker Margot Lobree, a 93-year-old Holocaust survivor from Germany. Mrs. Lobree shared stories about her life leading up to and following her escape from Germany to England in 1939. Her life in England was wrought with its own hardships, and not until 1944 did she make it to the United States. Her mother died during the war and Mrs. Lobree was separated from her brother for 25 years. Her account was powerful and unique in many ways, and her experience and wisdom captivated the student and faculty audience.

Despite the immeasurable hardships she endured earlier in her life, Mrs. Lobree’s attitude and message to students was overwhelmingly positive. She was clear that she has lived a good life; she continues to live it to the fullest, maintaining her own home, serving on various committees in town, regularly playing bridge with friends, and practicing yoga twice each week. She is proud of her faith but accepting of others, and she encouraged students to take the moral high ground whenever possible and to not be persuaded by bigotry or hate.

Thank you to sophomore Avi Kurtz for helping to arrange Mrs. Lobree’s visit and to our students for being such a respectful audience.
