    Bio
     
    Dr. Nathan Faulkner earned a bachelor’s degree in biological anthropology from Duke University, a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Winston-Salem State University, a master’s degree in mathematics from Wake Forest University, and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of South Carolina. With more than 6 years of teaching experience, Nathan has taught and tutored extensively at the college level at the University of South Carolina, Winston-Salem State University, Wake Forest University, and most recently, as a visiting assistant professor at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, N.C., where he taught Elementary Statistics, Pre-Calculus, Math for Liberal Arts, and Linear Algebra. He also has experience teaching College Algebra, Calculus, and Finite Mathematics. Nathan and his wife Cari have three children: August, Martin, and Brian.

    Tatum, a 2004 alumna of FCDS, attended Salem College as a Gramley Scholar and graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in religion and communication in 2008. Tatum was inducted into the religion (Theta Alpha Kappa) and communication (Lambda Pi Eta) honor societies during her undergraduate career. Tatum earned her master’s in teaching (K-6) from Salem College, where she was inducted into Kappa Delta Pi, the international honor society for education. She was chosen to present her master’s thesis at Salem’s Celebration of Academic Excellence to a room of more than 100 professors and peers. For three years, Tatum was the assistant director of elementary ministries at Reynolda Presbyterian Church, where she was instrumental in writing the current children’s curriculum.

    McKenna was born and raised just outside of Boulder, Colorado. She earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education with a minor in Spanish from the College of Charleston in Charleston, S.C. McKenna taught third grade in a school specifically designed for students with dyslexia and received Orton-Gillingham training at the Classroom Educator level. She is married to Wilson.

    Renee graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Before staying home briefly with two young sons, she was a Vice President in Private Banking at First Union National Bank. She got into the education field working at Salem Baptist Christian School and Piedmont Baptist College before coming to FCDS.

    An FCDS alumna, Ella earned her bachelor’s in sociology and English from Appalachian State University. Prior to becoming a preschool assistant teacher, she worked in the FCDS afterschool program and was a substitute teacher for approximately three years.

    Kim earned her bachelor’s degree in Classical Studies from Emory University and completed her teaching degree at Salem College. She served as an assistant teacher in a combined 1st/2nd grade classroom for two years at the Paideia School in Atlanta, Georgia. Working with the lead teacher, she created and implemented lesson plans in language arts, math, science, and social studies. Kim joined FCDS as an assistant in the EAP in 2013. Working with Pam Fulton, she completed her student teaching in 2015. She finished out the 2015/2016 school year as a first grade teacher. Kim reads and speaks with basic competency in French and Spanish. She is an alumna of FCDS (Class of '92) as was her late husband Roger Fowler (Class of '90). Their children are Fury ‘lifers’: Ella (FCDS ‘18), Grace (FCDS ‘20), and Owen (FCDS ‘24).

    Carey earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Concord College. After college, she began her teaching career in Virginia, where she taught second and third grade while earning her master’s degree as a reading specialist from Marshall University. Carey and her family relocated to Lewisville, N.C., where she received her Early Childhood Certificate from Forsyth Technical College and earning the opportunity to teach as an adjunct instructor at Forsyth Tech. During her 11 years in charter schools, Carey was chosen as a representative on the Leadership Team, was named Teacher of the Year and Teacher of the Triad (Schoolzen Contest), received the Golden Apple Award, led numerous professional development trainings for staff, presented at the NC Charter Schools Conference, and received Orton-Gillingham and Fundations Wilson Training. At Moore Magnet, she received the EDU Star award, was named Teacher of the Year, and was one of the top three candidates for WS/FCS Teacher of the Year. Carey and her husband, Kenny, have three children: Tyler, Bryson, and Kiersten.

    Born in Rochester, N.Y., Lauren moved to Winston-Salem when she was in second grade. She received her bachelor’s degree in architecture at Princeton University in 2006 and her MArch from The University of Virginia in 2009. Lauren is a LEED Accredited Professional and a Licensed Architect (2013). She has practiced architecture at Walter Robbs Callahan & Pierce Architects from 2009 to the present with a focus on sustainable design and adaptive reuse projects including the award-winning Bailey Power Plant in downtown Winston-Salem. She and her husband Danny have two children: Matthew and Christopher.

    Originally from Virginia, Renée earned her bachelor’s degree from Radford University, her master’s degree in education from The College of New Jersey, and is completing her doctorate (D.Ed.Min) from Virginia Theological Seminary. She has spent the past two decades living, learning, teaching, and leading in Mexico, Indonesia, The Netherlands, Spain, and El Salvador in roles that included classroom teacher, literacy coach, Head of Early Years, and Assistant Director of Elementary at both International Baccalaureate and American schools.

    Soni has a bachelor’s degree in history from Salem College. She worked for IBM in Raleigh before moving to Winston-Salem to raise her family. Soni started working for Knollwood Baptist Church Preschool when her own young children attended school there. She worked at Knollwood for eight years as a co-lead teacher for children ages infant to 2. Soni and her husband Errin have three children: Jake, Martin, and Ehren.

Forsyth Country Day School (FCDS) is a private, college preparatory, independent school for preschool through high school located in Lewisville, NC, just outside of Winston-Salem.
